Strelitzia nicolai – White Bird Of Paradise
Strelitzia nicolai impresses with its large leaves and is one of the most popular ornamental foliage plants. This is also the case in our FYTA office.
However, this sad specimen suffered a lot in our winter garden in the summer. I use the FYTA Beam to find out what the plant is missing.
He tells me that the substrate is still wet, so the only explanation for such sad leaves must be a very low humidity. In a closed winter garden in the summer midday sun, the humidity can drop below 20 %... A horror for most plants!
So I first put the plant outside, where the humidity is higher than indoors, and give it a good shower. Now I give the plant some time to recover and produce fresh, healthy leaves. Later, I can still cut off the old leaves or remove brown spots if necessary. But I'm holding off, as removing leaves that are still partially green can weaken the plant. As it has suffered in the winter garden, I don't want to stress it even more now.
Update
About three months after the winter garden accident, the Strelitzia has already produced three new, healthy leaves.
