INFORMATION
Spider mites like it warm and dry. The heating season and the warm summer months are therefore particularly critical. A clear distinguishing feature are the fine webs with small white dots on the underside of leaves and in the branches. Finally, the leaves of the plant curl up and the sucking damage itself is small yellow or silver-colored leaf spots. The leaves also become lighter in color and appear limp. The spider mites themselves are so small that they are difficult to see.
What you need
Step 1/8
You can recognize spider mites by the fine spider webs and white mini crumbs.
Step 2/8
Cut off heavily infested leaves.
Step 3/8
Spray the leaves with water and wipe them thoroughly with a damp cloth on the top and especially on the underside.
Step 4/8
For thick-leaved plants, you can also use a mixture of liquid soap and water: Mix water and a splash of liquid soap and use this instead of pure water. Repeat this three to five days later to catch the newly hatched spider mites.
Step 5/8
You can also use a mild pesticide. Apply the plant protection spray to the top and underside of the leaves and to the branches and shoots. Repeat this process after a few days. Note that plants with fragile, thin leaves sometimes do not tolerate aggressive pesticides well.
Step 6/8
Instead of using the soap-water mixture or pesticides, you can also use beneficial insects. Predatory mites are suitable here. Don’t worry! They are tiny and not dangerous. Hang the bag (or bags, depending on the size of the plant) on the plant. The predatory mites multiply and reduce depending on the food supply. Use them immediately after delivery.
Important! Never use beneficial insects and pesticides or household remedies at the same time. The beneficial insects will be harmed, as will the pests.
Step 7/8
Shower your plants regularly to make it harder for spider mites in the future.
Step 8/8
Increase the humidity. You can place bowls of water on the heater or organize a humidifier.
